"I don't just train dogs — I build trust."
Robert Santana, PhD, RD, SSC, is widely recognized for his knowledge, skills, and expertise in strength coaching, nutrition, and human performance, with a career spanning over two decades. As a Registered Dietitian, Starting Strength Coach, and owner of Weights & Plates Gym in Phoenix, Arizona, Robert has built a reputation for his intense, goal-oriented, and client-centered coaching style, helping clients achieve measurable results in strength, muscle gain, and overall fitness.
Inspired by the discipline and precision of obedience-trained dogs featured in tv shows and films, Robert found a new passion beyond the gym. Captivated by the remarkable abilities of these canine performers, he decided to immerse himself in the world of dog training, applying the same scientific curiosity and dedication that defined his strength coaching career. What began as a personal interest and hobby quickly evolved into a professional pursuit: Robert now actively trains dogs in obedience, while developing himself as a handler in bite sports, K9 work, scent detection, and bird hunting.
Drawing on his background in education and practical coaching, Robert approaches dog training with a the same methodical and evidence-based mindset he applied when coaching humans. He is dedicated to developing strong and confident pets while expanding his knowledge in the sport and working dog arenas through continuous learning from experienced trainers and handlers. Whether working with companion animals or sport dogs, Robert applies the principles of progressive training, clear communication, and functional and measurable outcomes—hallmarks of his approach with human athletes—to help dogs and their owners achieve their highest potential.
Robert’s journey from strength coach to dog trainer exemplifies his commitment to lifelong learning and his passion for helping others—both human and canine—develop strength, confidence, and skill.
